Whitby Jet is fossilised monkey puzzle tree found in the cliffs around the area of Whitby, North Yorkshire in England. The tree ancestor of our modern day monkey puzzle tree grew around 180 million years ago in the Jurassic Period.
Whitby Jet takes a high polish when worked by hand and has been sought after for jewellery for over 2,000 years. To wear a piece of Whitby Jet Jewellery is to truly wear a piece of history. Whitby Jet is found amongst the remains of the Roman and Viking eras and some of their designs are still used today. Jet was popularised over a hundred years ago by Queen Victoria and remains popular today although raw jet is becoming increasingly difficult to find. We often holiday near Whitby and can be found beach combing on the hunt for Whitby Jet.
We are very proud to continue the heritage of Whitby Jet and hope that you enjoy wearing your handcrafted piece of jewellery.
