Caring for your jewellery not only keeps it looking beautiful, it preserves the craftsmanship, protects your investment, and often carries deep sentimental value. Whether your piece is silver, gold, gemstone set, plated, or designer-made, a little attention goes a long way.
Daily Wear Tips
Remove jewellery before using household cleaners, swimming, showering, or applying lotion, perfume, or hairspray. Chemicals can damage metals and certain gemstones.
When putting on rings, bracelets or necklaces, do so last, after makeup and perfume, to minimise exposure to chemicals.
Avoid sleeping in delicate pieces, especially those with fragile settings or gemstones.
Cleaning Your Jewellery
- For gold & solid silver: use a soft cloth with mild soapy water. Rinse thoroughly, dry completely.
- For gemstone jewellery: check if the stone is porous or heat sensitive. Use only gentle solutions; avoid ultrasonic cleaners for opals, pearls, coral, etc.
- For plated pieces: avoid abrasive cleaners; clean gently and pat dry—excess rubbing or harsh liquids can wear off plating.
Storage
- Store items separately, soft pouch or individual compartments, to avoid scratches.
- Keep silver in anti-tarnish bags or wrapped in cloth.
- Store in a dry place, avoid extreme heat or humidity.
Professional Maintenance
- Have settings checked regularly if you wear a piece often, loose stones can be lost.
Special Materials
Some materials need extra care:
- Pearls, coral, opals – avoid exposure to acids, direct heat, harsh cleaning; wipe after wear.
- Marcasite - avoid exposure to water, liquids and moisture.
- Plated jewellery – avoid exposure to water & abrasion; store & clean carefully.
